The Chickens

We love the variety here at Mulberry Apiary. Because of this, we have chickens all from different heritage breeds. The king of our coup is a small silkie rooster named Smokey. With the help of Craigslist and Amazon, we found the best system for that works for us. Our coup is 95% solar powered with solar light, solar door and a solar motion activated floodlight (to keep away predators). We also have awnings we found for free on craigs-list to help keep the rain off our most fragile chickens; the silkies. We use horizontal water nipples for watering from April-November. A more detailed explanation of our water system in the winter can bee seen below. You can visit our products page to see links to all these items.

Chicken Waters
Summer Chicken Waters

We found a 30 gallon food grade barrel off of craigslist for $15. We use this for watering our chickens in the summer along with apple cider vinegar in the water.

We put in horizontal water nipples. This keeps the water cleaner and they are good down to freezing tempatures.

The water barrel is attached to the post and fence so it can not tip over. The water in this container with apple cider vinegar lasts between 2-3 weeks. Then we wash out the container and add more acv.
Winter Chicken Waters

This is our winter water heater. It is made out of a 5 gallon bucket. Under the black gorilla tape is reflective bubble insulation. This insulation is also under the bucket and on top of the bucket. There is a bird bath heater sitting inside the bucket which keeps the horizontal nipples from freezing.

This is a temperature switch. It turns on the power when the temps drop below 32*f.

This is the bird bath heater located inside the insulated bucket.
