Using Amaranth in the winter for the chickens

I love elephant head amaranth. It's a self sowing flowering grain that has so many wonderful uses. From grain, to popcorn, humans have been eating it for 100s of years. It is also a great grain to feed chickens and comes back every year (sometimes in slightly different locations in the garden).

During the summer months you can feed the green leaves to the chickens. In the fall this ancient grain turns brown. This is when you know it is ready to feed the chickens.

Harvesting is easily done for the chickens. Just cut off a head and toss it in. One head of amaranth lasts about a day in a half for 17 chickens. When they are done there is only the stick left.
