This weeks featured plant is the Butternut tree (Juglans cinerea) Zone 3-7. This is a native tree that can grow up to 60 feet tall. It is a slow growing tree that only grows 12 inches a year. The oval nuts are ready to eat by mid to late October. They are part of the walnut family but are more buttery and sweater in flavor. To harvest you pick them up off the ground, remove the papery husks, wash them (throw away any that float) and dry them in the sun. They store well. Here is a link on some more tips.
