This weeks featured plant is the Serviceberry ( Amelanchier canadensis) Zone 2-8. This is a large bush that can grow anywhere from 4 feet wide to 15 feet wide and 4 feet high to 20 feet high. It flowers in early spring and give you a nice purple berry that is very similar to blueberries. It gets the name Serviceberry because it was one of the first flowering plants in the spring so pioneers used the flowers for there spring burial services for those who passed over the winter. The bush is low maintenance and much easier to grow than a blueberry. However; the purple berry is a little drier than a blueberry. The berry can be eaten fresh, made into jams or jellies and made into pie.
